Googlebook, the laptop Google announced in May, went on sale on October 4 in the US and on October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia. There are five models made by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with a US starting price of $899 (about ₩1,259,000).

The operating system is Googlebook OS, which combines the ChromeOS desktop on top of Android technology. Alongside it, Google said it will update ChromeOS until mid-2034 and then move to Googlebook OS, an announcement that affects existing Chromebook users too. Korea wasn’t among the first countries to get it.

Googlebook OS and Android apps

Googlebook OS is an operating system that adds ChromeOS’s desktop foundation to the Android technology stack. It offers the full Chrome browser, Android apps from the Google Play Store, and a Linux terminal together.

Android phone integration features include Continue On, which picks up on the laptop what you were doing on your phone; Files, which opens phone photos and files directly; and Cast My Apps, which shows phone apps in a laptop window.

Gemini features

With Magic Pointer, you move the cursor to point at text or images on screen and Gemini handles a task based on that content. Google’s example was turning a marathon training plan into calendar events. Also included are Rambler, which organizes spoken thoughts into notes with headings and to-dos, and Create My Widget, which builds the widget you describe by voice.

What changes for Chromebook users

Google said ChromeOS devices will receive regular updates and security patches until mid-2034. It said it will help devices that still have time left on their 10-year update period move to Googlebook OS, but hasn’t yet disclosed which models qualify.

Group What Google said
Existing Chromebooks Updates until mid-2034
School and business purchases Chromebooks still sold
Existing management licenses Remain valid on Chromebooks

Google’s explanation is that schools and companies can keep buying Chromebooks for now. The first Googlebooks are for individuals and can’t be managed in bulk, and a new license scheme applies to devices that move over.

Availability in Korea

Korea isn’t among the seven first-wave countries. Google hasn’t announced a schedule for Korea.

In Korea, Chromebooks from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics have been sold mainly for education. Chromebooks you already own get updates until mid-2034, so there’s no need to replace them right away; to use Android phone integration and Gemini features on a laptop, you’ll have to wait for a Korean launch. The won conversions of US prices are for reference only, and Korean prices will vary with taxes and distribution.
